I sometimes wonder how many interesting people we accidentally miss simply because they don't look interesting in the first five minutes. Maybe the quiet girl in the corner has the most outrageous sense of humor. Maybe the serious man across the table has a completely ridiculous collection of childhood stories. I love the thought that almost everyone is hiding a version of themselves that only a few people ever get to meet. And yes, I suspect I have a few hidden versions too. There is the girl who goes to the gym and genuinely enjoys challenging herself. There is another who can spend an embarrassing amount of time deciding what to watch, only to return to a series she already knows. One part of me wants to see California, Madeira and every beautiful corner of the world. Another can become perfectly happy staying in one place when the company is right. But here is something I find funny about myself. I can translate words from one language into another, yet I still occasionally struggle to explain exactly what I am feeling. Apparently, emotions refuse to cooperate with grammar. I have a weakness for people who surprise me without trying too hard. Someone who remembers an insignificant detail from a conversation. Someone who asks a question I have never been asked before. Someone who can turn a completely ridiculous discussion into the most interesting part of my day. I don't want to spend my life collecting impressive experiences while forgetting to actually feel them. I would rather have a few memories that still make me laugh years later, even if nobody else understands what was so funny. Maybe that is why I decided to try this dating site. Somewhere out there might be a man who sees a little more than the obvious, who notices the person behind the photographs and is curious enough to keep looking. I am not expecting love to arrive with a dramatic announcement. I think a good relationship might begin much more quietly, perhaps with one conversation that was supposed to last ten minutes and somehow steals an entire evening. And if that happens, I hope neither of us is in a hurry to say goodbye.
I have a question for the man I haven't met yet. If we were invited to a very elegant dinner, and halfway through the evening I accidentally knocked over a glass of water, what would you do? Would you look embarrassed? Pretend you didn't notice? Start explaining how I should have been more careful? Or would you calmly help me rescue the tablecloth and whisper something so ridiculous that I would have to make a heroic effort not to laugh? I already know which answer would make me want a second date. You see, I am not looking for a man who can guarantee that nothing embarrassing will ever happen when we are together. That would be an impossible promise, especially considering that I occasionally have brilliant ideas that turn out to be significantly less brilliant in practice. I want someone who knows how to handle the unexpected without making it worse. A man whose presence makes an awkward moment feel like a funny story we will tell later. There is a particular kind of confidence I find irresistible. It doesn't announce itself, demand attention or need an expensive suit to exist. It is simply there, in the way a man behaves when circumstances refuse to cooperate. I like a man who can make decisions without making everyone around him feel small. Who can take initiative without turning every situation into a demonstration of authority. Someone who understands that being strong doesn't mean being the loudest person in the room. Sometimes strength is simply knowing when to speak, when to listen and when to quietly put your arm around someone who needs it. I would love to meet a man who has a generous imagination. Not necessarily someone who writes poetry or paints landscapes, although that could be interesting too. I mean someone who can imagine a life beyond the routine he already knows. A man who can look at an unfamiliar city and wonder what it would be like to get lost in its streets. Who can hear about a new experience and feel curiosity before finding ten reasons why it might be inconvenient. Someone who hasn't decided that all the interesting things in life have already happened. I want us to make plans that excite us. Maybe we will visit a beautiful island, discover a little restaurant that nobody seems to know about or take a spontaneous trip simply because the weather is perfect and staying home suddenly feels like a terrible waste. But I also want to be able to enjoy a quiet evening with him w...
My favorite hobby is learning languages. I love discovering how people from different countries express their thoughts, feelings and even humor. Sometimes one unusual word can tell you more about a culture than an entire travel guide. And I find it fascinating that the same sentence can sound romantic in one language and absolutely ridiculous in another!
